Why your Google Business Profile isn't generating calls

A Google Business Profile that shows thousands of impressions but produces almost no calls usually has one of eight specific problems — and most of them can be fixed in an afternoon without spending anything.

Impressions without calls is one of the most common patterns we see in local businesses. It is also one of the most fixable, because the causes are nearly always structural rather than competitive.

1. You are appearing for the wrong searches

Impressions counts every time you appear, including for searches you cannot serve. Check the "Searches" breakdown in your profile insights. If most of your impressions come from your own business name, you are being found by people who already know you — which is not new business.

2. Your categories are wrong or too few

The primary category carries enormous weight in local ranking. "Builder" and "Roofing contractor" surface for completely different searches. Set the primary category as narrowly and accurately as you can, then add every genuinely applicable secondary category.

3. You have no photographs, or only old ones

Profiles with recent, real photographs get materially more engagement. Photographs of completed work outperform premises shots, which outperform stock imagery — which actively harms you, because it reads as inauthentic.

4. Your reviews have stopped

Review recency matters, not just count. Twelve reviews from this year outperform forty from three years ago. If you have no system for requesting reviews, you do not have a review strategy — you have luck.

The most effective approach is a request sent automatically a few days after the work completes, with a direct link to the review form. Asking verbally on site almost never converts.

5. You have not answered any questions

The Q&A section is publicly editable. If you have not populated it, either it is empty — which suggests nobody cares — or somebody else has answered on your behalf, possibly wrongly. Seed it yourself with the questions you actually get asked.

6. Your service area is unrealistic

Setting a service radius covering half the country does not increase reach; it dilutes relevance. Google weights proximity heavily. Set the area you genuinely serve.

7. Your hours are wrong, or you are closed when people search

Profiles marked closed are deprioritised in the moment somebody is searching. If a meaningful share of your searches happen outside your listed hours, either extend them or add a call-answering arrangement — because those impressions are being wasted.

8. Your website undermines the profile

This is the one most businesses miss. Someone finds your profile, clicks through, lands on a slow page with no phone number visible, and leaves. The profile did its job. The website lost the call.

Check on a phone, on mobile data rather than wifi. If your number is not visible and tappable within the first screen, that is where your calls are going.

What to do first

In order of return for effort: fix your primary category, add ten recent photographs, start requesting reviews systematically, then make your phone number tappable in the header of every page on your website. Those four take an afternoon and typically move things more than anything else available for free.
